Diverse Opportunities, Exciting Career Paths

The maritime industry offers thousands of unique, challenging, fun, exotic, and well-paying career opportunities that can be pursued part-time or full-time, enabling you to turn your passion into a profitable venture. Imagine yourself in the open air, steering the course of commercial transport vessels, delighting cruise ship passengers, managing fishing charters, overseeing luxurious super yachts, leading dive boat excursions, or taking travellers on scenic tours along Australia’s beautiful coastal shores.

The commercial possibilities are endless:

Everything you need to become a fully qualified skipper or deckhand and operate commercial maritime vessels safely and effectively

Cert I In Maritime Operations

(GENERAL PURPOSE HAND)

The General Purpose Deckhand certificate is the perfect entry-level course for individuals aspiring to work on maritime vessels, either on deck or in the engine room of a vessel up to 80 metres.

Coxswain Cert II Grade NC1

(Can carry passengers)

The Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal will allow you to command and operate the engines of a vessel less than 12 metres long with unlimited outboard engine propulsion, or inboard engines less than 500 kW.

Coxswain Cert I Grade NC2

(CanNOT carry passengers)

The Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal will allow you to command and operate the engines of a vessel less than 12 metres long with unlimited outboard engine propulsion, or inboard engines less than 100 kW.

Coxswain Grade 3

The Coxswain Grade 3 certificate provides basic seamanship knowledge and skills, and as at October 2023 it replaces the current Exemption 38 (Low complexity duties) arrangements. It allows you to command and operate small domestic commercial vessels in smooth waters or close to shore.

Shipboard Safety Skill Set

A popular and essential safety course for anyone performing work or undertaking leisure activities on the water, including recreational boat owners, sailing or boat club members, competitive sailors, and fishing club members. It is a compulsory OHS unit for GPH Deckhands, Coxswains, Engineers and Masters.

Marine Radio

This skill set is Nationally accredited and required if you want to work on any commercial vessel, including fishing, tourism, trade and construction. Recreational boaters participate in the course to obtain their VHF radio license, which is mandatory if going off shore.

Your certification source can open doors or close them – train with the best and get a certificate that holds weight in the maritime industry.

The Industry Leader in Online & Practical Training

MTA was the first training provider in Australia to offer this type of training online. Our commercial marine qualifications are delivered through an advanced learning platform, enabling you to complete the theoretical component online at your own pace and from your own home. This is followed by a practical, in-person component at convenient locations across Australia. Both the online and practical hands-on components offered by the academy are second to none, which is a major reason why students choose to study with us.

We have students who fly in from all over Australia to do the practical assessments
